The Old Olive Mill

Right on the heel of Italy in Puglia, situated on the edge of a typical, peaceful Salentine village is the Old Olive Mill, a small family run Masseria. Renowned for its traditional cuisine based on ancient Salentine recipes using the freshest local ingredients, this Old Olive Mill offers appetizing dishes from the freshest seafood specialities to scrumptious vegetarian dishes which have earned the restaurant an enviable reputation in the area. “Roast lamb with wild thyme bread served with garlic potatoes and pine nuts” – is just one example of the many mouthwatering dishes they have to offer. Meals are served in the elegant, characteristic restaurant with its high, Arabic vaulted ceilings and a huge open old stone fireplace.

Antonio and Patrizia the friendly Italian owners have beautifully restored and converted this masseria providing a total of eleven rooms. The Old Olive Mill makes an excellent base for exploring the Salento area including the delightful towns of Otranto, Lecce, Santa Maria De Leuca (the southern most tip of Puglia) and the fishing port of Gallipoli. For those not wishing to hire a car a Puglia Explorer tour and cookery course is arranged for small groups. (more details p.55) Sandy beaches at Otranto can be reached within fifteen minutes. Travelling south from Otranto are many quiet coves with crystal clear waters.

The tranquil grounds boast a good sized swimming pool (17x7 metres) surrounded by olive trees and a small pine wood. Antonio is a keen sailor and can also arrange skippered tours along the gulf of Otranto in his sailing boat.

Bedrooms are well appointed and have modern en-suite bathrooms. Four rooms on the first floor have furnished terraces.
