Sicily

Sicily has been a meeting place for different cultures throughout the course of its long history, having been occupied by Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans and Spanish. All have left their diverse influences on both the culture and architecture. As one of the most cosmopolitan regions in Italy, it is also the largest and has a strong, independent character.

Feast your eyes on the superb remains of ancient Greece to be found at Agrigento, Selinunte and Siracusa (the birthplace of Archimedes). Near the town of Piazza Armerina, you can see the most exceptional Roman mosaics in the world.

For beach lovers, Sicily enjoys more sunshine than anywhere else in Europe. The coastline varies from soft sandy beaches in the southern part of the island to rocky headlands between Messina and Cefalu, offering panoramic views.

The inland scenery is truly breathtaking, culminating in Mount Etna, the largest volcano in Europe. Explore the crater on foot - the views from the top of Mount Etna are astounding. The lower slopes of Etna in northeastern Sicily are a luxuriant mix of dense forests with vineyards, ancient olive groves, almond orchards and vast wheat fields.

Sicily is also a land of lemon and orange groves. If you visit Taormina, you will find it is heavily perfumed with citrus blossom.

For the hustle and bustle of a typical Sicilian market, visit Catania and Palermo, where you will find a colourful array of the freshest fruit and vegetables.
